|In the spring of 1977, prior to that championship show in
Denver, a meeting was held in San Francisco to discuss the formation of an organization
that would govern the color guard activity from coast to coast. 6 people attended the
original meeting in S.F. Don Angelica, Bryan Johnston, Marie Chapinski, Shirlee Whitcomb,
Stanley Knaub and Linda Chambers. It was at that meeting that the name Winter Guard
International was selected. Bryan Johnson was selected to chair a meeting some time
later that year to see if there was enough interest in forming this organization.|
In October of 1997, With the blessings of DCI Executive Director Don Pesceone, A meeting was held at the DCI rules congress in Chicago. Many of the great guard instructors at the time (George Zangali, John Brazale, Len Kruszecki, Stanley Knaub, and Steve Suslik) were also teaching drum corps and would already be in attendance. The meeting was an open forum for anyone to attend. Representatives of all of the established color guard circuits from around the country were also invited to attend.
